Seattle-based Weyerhaeuser and the company’s charity arm, the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation, will donate $1 million to the Nature Conservancy, a privately held non-profit organization that supports forest conservation and biodiversity projects in the Northwest and Southeast.
The contributions will include both cash and interests in forestland. The donation marks its largest gift to a U.S. conservation organization, the company said.
Weyerhaeuser is focusing on projects in the Northwest and the Southeast because the paper and forest products company owns or leases 6.4 million acres of managed forests in those two regions, the company said.
Over the next five years, Weyerhaeuser and the Nature Conservancy will select conservation and biodiversity projects in several states, including Washington, Oregon, North Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana and Oklahoma, with the first round of projects to be selected this fall. The company and the organization have also agreed to work collaboratively to improve their understanding of managed forests and biodiversity conservation.
Weyerhaeuser is one of the world's largest integrated forest products companies. The company grows and harvests timber; manufactures, distributes and sells forest products; and is involved in real estate construction, development and related activities.
