New Edition of Maximum Spans Booklet Published

[Source: www.southernpine.com, May 4, 2010]

The Southern Pine Council (SPC) has published an updated edition of its popular booklet, Maximum Spans for Joists & Rafters. This 36-page publication is a compilation of 46 span tables covering the most common grades of MSR, MEL and visually graded lumber. Span comparisons by species are listed along with reference design values. For the first time, five joist and rafter examples are included to demonstrate use of the tables.

“This booklet remains one of SPC’s most-requested titles,” says Cathy Kaake, SFPA’s senior director of engineered and framing markets. “We have updated some important text throughout, plus added some new information about the environmental benefits of using wood.” Other explanatory text was added to this new edition to conform with the 2005 National Design Specification, or NDS®. With input from Southern Pine producers of machine evaluated (MEL) and machine stress rated (MSR) lumber, a table listing commonly produced sizes and grades was updated, too.

The Southern Pine Council (SPC) is a promotional program sponsored by the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA), a nonprofit trade association representing Southern Pine lumber producers. SPC is the leading source of information about Southern Pine products for design-build professionals and consumers.
